In short, No!
A recent post on not biting off too much project management generated some debate. The post seemed to suggest that while you start project teams off with a small amount of project management that you gradually build up the diet over time, giving them more and more project management as their stomach grows. The last post certainly did advocate starting teams with an amount of project management that they were likely to be able to easily digest. However the post did not mean to suggest that the real objective was to keep walking the line (see diagram below) to the right. When you re-look at the line you will notice that it has arrows on both ends - depicting that is is OK to walk in either direction! To the right of the line are projects that need lots of project management. To the left of the line are projects that need small amounts of project management due to their nature. In between there is a mixture of needs. Every organization that I have seen (so far!) has a mixture of projects at varying points on the line. The points on the line below while based on the BrightWork experience are of course arbitrary. Any organization who does not like the divisions on the line below can draw their own line. The point is not that it is this exact line - the point is that there is some line! The line reflects the reality of the variety of project management needed today. Organizations do not need need some ideal version of what project management could be - there are plenty of models filling this niche - they need a real version of what it can be. The list architecture of SharePoint makes it a great platform for the project management line and all points thereon! At BrightWork we will continue to work both ends of the line and all points in between.
