More on leadership - are you listening?!

Mar-232009

The last two posts were all about leadership - Book Review: Leadership - A very different twist and People Centered Leadership Lessons from an Army General. If you are serious about developing your skills in project management, then you of course have to be a student of leadership as you develop your own sytle of leadership.  One more post then about leadership.  All good things come in three's - right!  For this article let me lean on Geof Lory.

I first met Geof Lory a few years ago when Geof was working with GMAC.  I liked Geof's approach and manner.  Always calm, intelligent, respectful and interested.  Geof pens a nice article every now and again under the banner of "Project Parenthood", with a sub-title as follows, "Project management and parenting share similar concepts".  I have added a link to Geof's articles under the "Links" section of this blog on the left hand side.

Frequently on projects we complain that we as project managers or as customers are the last to hear the update.  But do we really listen?  Geof's latest article is on the different types of listening and is titled - Where do you listen from?  It is worth a read and then reflecting on your own style of listening.  I was surprised that Geof resisted the temptation to remind us all that we have one mouth and two ears for a very good reason!
