I often get the question - "Is pmPoint for large deployments or small deployments? Is it for folks with lots of project management or a little project management? Is pmPoint for large organizations or small organizations?" (pmPoint by the way is a work and project management plug-in for SharePoint).
In reality we meet organizations who have groups where they have very small amounts of project management and they have other groups where they have projects that require large amounts of project management. We meet organizations where they have teams who have no formal training in project management and absolutely no defined process for project management. And sometimes in the same organization there will be well trained project management professionals. And this spectrum is the norm not the exception! The reality is a mix. What organizations need is support for the variety of work and project types that they have. They do not need some idealized system that supports how we all might like it to be! The "line" below depicts this reality.
The "line" explains that there are many graduations of management required. The line explains that these all exist in operation at the same time in the same organization. The line represents the reality that we find in most organizations. Most tough issues we encounter in life are not pure black or white - they are various shades of gray. Note that the arrows are on both ends of the line and note that they point out. It is not a race to the right - it is not a race to be more structured. The arrows pointing both ways depicts the reality that organizations walk the line and adopt differing management approaches to different situations.
And any work and project management approach (and thus pmPoint) needs to cater for the realities described above - not some idealized state. There are lots of tools out there that cater for very large deployments - and there are many tools out there that support very simple approaches to project management. But the new world of work and project management is mixed - accept it, get on with it and deal with it! What we do with pmPoint is support this reality by delivering different features in our templates that give organizations of all shapes and types a very fast starting point. Folks can also use our cool features to build their own templates, but most elect to start with one of ours to accelerate the process. So while the templates are key, the real key is that the rich variety of the templates replicate the reality we speak about above. Hopefully that answers the above questions, but just in case ... pmPoint is for real organizations, big and small, with real work and project management challenges, both big and small.
