We are all human? – right! We delivered a webcast yesterday with the title “Finally, Project Management for Mere Mortals – Using SharePoint”. So what was this all about?! By way of anecdote I helped one of our team complete a “Vendor Self Test” profile last week. It was from one of the industry analysts. It had 100 questions where we had to be rated 1 to 5. It was very well structured and was easy enough to complete. However it did provoke some thoughts. We had talked to the customer and understood their needs and they have decided to go with our pmPoint solution for work and project management. This customer is in the financial services sector so they are no strangers to project management. However I am pretty sure that if they selected a solution that answered with a 5 score to all 100 questions, that the solution would be completely un-implementable! There is no way the needed all this management / complexity. It would have drowned them. They are mere mortals like the rest of us – even if they are in the financial services sector – well maybe especially because they are in the financial services sector! Our webcast yesterday put out 5 perspectives (see below) and then did a demo of a solution on SharePoint that was guided by these perspectives.
- Be realistic - Build templates that mimic different project types that exist in reality
- Be practical - Be faithful to the SharePoint architecture – and do not get caught offside
- Be prepared - Develop a simple process for project management – and get agreement on same
- Be honest - Be careful to balance structure with flexibility
- Be open - This can work for small or large organizations
Feel free to review the webcast and give us your feedback on the perspectives.
