One of the things that I was very interested in at IPM Day 2011 was to learn about the trends happening in the world of project management and how those trends are affecting the way organizations and individuals manage projects. Mark Langley, President and CEO, Project Management Institute delivered a fascinating presentation on this topic. Here are three of the main trends he identified as we look forward towards the future:
· Innovation in products and business processes tailored for those fast-growing markets (and increasingly developed there) is putting a premium on organizational dexterity, and on project management practices that support it.
· Despite faltering employment figures in the US and Europe, skills such as project and program management remain in short supply - so improvements in talent management and expansion of the project management talent "pipeline" development are more pressing than ever.
· Portfolio management and understanding the role of a PMO in aligning projects with strategy are spreading from the largest, most "projectized" organizations to mid-sized corporations and government agencies.
This presentation explains these trends and their implications for project and portfolio management.
