I recently came across an interesting presentation from Harold Kerzner of IIL on the value of Project Metrics and why it is so important to track them.
Firstly, in order to effectively manage of project, you need accurate and complete data to make informed decisions about the direction of the project. By selecting and measuring the best metrics, you will have the most up-to-date insight into health of the project, and then re-plan accordingly. As projects get bigger and more complex, project metrics become even more crucial in order to track the overall health of a project.
Good metrics allow you to identify specific data that you want to track and discover trends in the data to easily see which ones are on track or could possibly be in danger. They also offer a quick snapshot of whether or not project milestones are being reached. Metrics are not just reports on the project at a given point in time, but rather serve as continuous health checks on the project throughout its lifecycle.
