If (like me) you’ve been fascinated by Microsoft’s recent look and feel makeover, then the news that they have launched a brand new corporate logo will be of interest.
As you can see, the new logo is true to the Metro (now called Modern UI) aesthetic that we are seeing everywhere.
Most versions of the old logo did not include the four colour brick that I’ve included below for illustration purposes.
I believe the new logo will change this. I’m guessing that most of the time we see the logotype (the words), it will actually be accompanied by the symbol (the brick). I also think, as before, we will see a lot of the symbol by itself.
I think my favourite thing about the new logo is the apparent dropping of the ® symbol (hopefully intentional). To me, the ® nearly always ruins the harmony of a logo, looking more like a graphic design error than anything actually legible. They are actually legally unnecessary since they offer no extra protection: once a logo is registered, it is registered. Of course, they may discourage someone from misusing your logo, but really – how likely is such a person to be discouraged by a tiny ®?
I think my least favourite thing about the new logo is trying to account for all the places I will have to apply it!
